Senior Leadership Challenge Program

SLC 1 ‘Journey’ & SLC 2 ‘New Horizons’
We have expanded our already successful SLC program into two sequential & progressive sessions.
SLC 1 - Journey 2 Week Program
PLEASE NOTE: our SLC 1 “Journey” program is now at full capacity.
This two week program is specifically designed for 15 yr old individuals with the desire to explore not only the wilderness, but themselves as well. The personal growth element of the program is ultimately a product of the outdoor training and hard skill development. Through the shared challenges of a wilderness expedition participants learn ‘hands on’ about effective communication, conflict resolution, judgment, decision-making, and teamwork while also beginning to explore leadership styles and skills.
As part of their wilderness experience, SLC 1 campers will embark on an extended multi-day canoe excursion on the Sunshine Coast of BC. SLC 1 participants are involved in all of the organizing and planning aspects of these expeditions. Through the development of these “hard skills” participants gain confidence in their outdoor skills and personal abilities.
When not on trip, SLC 1 campers will explore all of the great adventure activities that Summit has to offer – mountain biking, climbing, canoeing – all with the intent to hone skills, move out of ‘comfort zones’, and challenge themselves both physically and mentally. Any young person with the desire to push themselves in a wilderness setting will enjoy our ‘Journey’ program immensely!
- Monday August 2 to Sunday August 15th $1697.00

SLC2 – New Horizons 3 Week Program
This three week program is specifically designed for 16 yr old individuals with not only the passion to continue exploring the wilderness & growing personally, but also the desire and intent to learn about leadership, mentoring, and teaching others. This program is the natural evolution of SLC 1. The SLC 2 program continues building personal growth through outdoor training and hard skill development but begins to move the focus towards how one can apply skills and knowledge to guide and help others. On top of gaining self-reliance in the wilderness participants undertake a 16-hour Standard First Aid certification course and partake in activity workshops that explore further concepts of responsibility, leadership, and mentoring roles in a community. The experience inherently ingrains a sense of social responsibility, compassion, respect for oneself and others, and a conscience for the world we live in.
As part of the wilderness experience, SLC 2 campers will embark on multi day backpacking expedition in the spectacular Coast Mountains surrounding Squamish. Participants are involved in all aspects of these expeditions including the initial route selection, menu planning, food/gear pack in/out, campsite selection/set-up, and cooking. Over the course of the program participants gain competency in route finding with a map and compass, backcountry safety procedures and “Leave No Trace” environmental principles. Further development of “hard skills” will allow participants to gain confidence in their outdoor skills and the knowledge to plan and eventually lead their own backcountry expeditions.
When not on expedition SLC 2 campers integrate into the Camp Summit residential programs as active observers and assistant leaders. Through this participants gain additional leadership and teaching skills in all of our activities such as mountain biking, archery, arts & crafts, orienteering, and climbing. They also have an opportunity to apply their leadership skills through the design and instruction of their own events and activities for the younger campers.
- Saturday July 3rd to Friday July 23rd $2442.00

Leaders-In-Training 7 Week Program

The focus of the LIT program is for participants who are 17 years of age to acquire the skills and confidence to lead youth in an outdoor adventure, camp setting and in their communities back home. The LIT program emphasizes responsibility and caring for the camp community – the focus is on ‘others’ rather than on oneself. The LIT program prepares participants to be part of a workforce team, managing job responsibilities, and allowing the experience of full time work, while still being trained in an ‘apprenticeship’ style program. It is important to note that this program is the transition from being a camper towards being a counselor and participants must have a strong desire to work with youth.
How does the program work? LITs play a key role in the camp community - LITs are paired up with experienced cabin counsellors to lead a cabin group of 7-15 year old campers through their summer camp experience. Participants have the opportunity to explore responsibility and act as mentors and guides to the residential campers while being supervised by a senior camp staff. The LIT participates in all of the activities with their cabin groups including mountain biking, rock climbing, archery, orienteering, and backcountry camping trips; at times, LITs also work with the activity instructors to learn how to instruct these outdoor activities. LITs will participate in leadership workshops with the LIT Coordinator focusing on child and youth development with an Anti-Oppression framework. This framework is centered around becoming consciously aware of sensitive issues such as race, creed, ability/disability, class, and much more. LITs are given a well rounded and varied program to allow them to experience all aspects of camp.
- LIT Full Program – Sunday June 28th - Sunday August 15th $750.00
- LIT Half Program 1 – Sunday June 28th – Friday July 23rd $500.00
- LIT Half Program 2 – Sunday June 28th to July 2nd (training week) Friday July 23rd to Sunday August 15th $500.00
